Fall/Spring Cleanup is IMPORTANT to Your Landscape......We Can Help

Fall and Spring cleanups are an important part of homeowner maintenance....or at least it should be. There are a number of reasons certain of these lawn/landscape tasks should be performed when due. Just like maintenance of your autos and mechanical systems of your home--Preventative maintenance of exterior structure and landscape areas can allow you to avoid costly repairs and time-consuming projects down the road.

Let's look at some of these:

1) MULCH/ROCK APPLICATION - Whatever the material you use in your flowerbeds, walkways, and other landscape areas; the importance of renewed application in the fall is evident. One of the main reasons is to keep the fill material underneath covered to avoid erosion during the heavy fall/spring rains. Secondly the prevention of weed germination in these areas is an important function of renewed landscape material installation. Protection of vegetation is an obvious function of many of the materials in the landscape making it important to keep the planting beds covered well before freeze.

2) LEAF/WEED REMOVAL - Leaves and weeds in the landscape stay damp and very often unfrozen in our area where the average winter temps stay above freezing moreso than not. This damp vegetation decays in your landscape creating layers of death and disease if left untreated. True; leaves are good mulch or compost in a modified and appropriately applied fashion BUT many issues arise otherwise-- Dead spots in lawn, disease/rot of ornamental vegetation, issues with drainage in the landscape/lawn, fungus growth, clogged gutters, habitation for nuisance animals/insects, more.

3) TRIMMING - As the weather changes from warm to cooler or just before the opposite; many plants slow in their life process to a stage atypical to dormancy. For many; this is the appropriate time to trim them to avoid bleeding of the sap. Excessive leaking of the sap during the hot weather taxes the resources of the vegetation as well as invites disease and insect infestation. The second benefit of making sure you trim any eligible vegetation in the fall is the ice storms we have here in the winter. Plain and simple--the less area for the ice to form on--the better chance your upright shrubs/trees have to remain upright and NOT uprooted. Spring cleanup guarantees trees/shrubs free of damaged limbs before summer growth

4) GUTTER CLEANING - This one goes with out saying. Leaves clog the gutter which clogs the downspout. Rain/snow water does not drain and fills the gutter. In the event of a freeze; a gutter full of water freezing to form a 'gutter icecube' can rip the lesser gutter from the house OR at least stress the system leaving it misaligned and dysfunctional til repaired. Even if this is not the case; a clogged gutter can spill over in some of the most inconvenient places like entry ways or in front of garage doors. Regardless of where the spillover is; it can result in a constant flow of water running across exterior surfaces causing leaks, mold, rot, and insect infestation. Nothing is more frustrating than uncleaned gutters and SPRING rains

5) PLANTING - Fall and Spring are a good time to plant many plants/shrubs/trees due to the slowing of the growth process as previously explained. The ground is good for prep with the rains and prior/after the winter freeze making it a good time to do installations of hardscape features like edging or stone.
